While the state budget includes a small additional distribution to SEPTA, it is less than one-fourth of what the authority originally requested, and the need for a permanent solution grows more urgent by the day.

Convened in the spring of 2022, the Blue-Ribbon Panel, consisting of education, social justice, business, and law enforcement experts, was given a mandate to investigate the root causes of fare and toll evasion and develop a comprehensive strategy to combat it.
The pilot aims to track and curb incidents of fare evasion, which costs SEPTA an estimated $30 million to $40 million annually.
As ridership grows, the agency will continue to incorporate innovative ways to serve customers throughout the region and keep them safe on their journey.
The TTC’s campaign comes as a new internal audit report shows fare evasion at an all-time high.
Emergency legislation, passed unanimously by the DC Council and signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser, includes a provision requiring anyone stopped for fare evasion to provide their true name and address, allowing police officers to issue civil citations.
The system is upgrading its fare gates for the first time in 20 years. BART has committed to opening 70-plus new fare gates systemwide by the end of 2025.
The MTA seeks to replace its legacy fare arrays and strategically deploy next generation fare gates that better align with the authority’s goals of promoting fare compliance, preventing fare evasion, and more.
Metro said it will continue to monitor the performance of the new faregates as more rollouts are completed.
