Modeshift Partners to Launch Next-Gen Validating Fareboxes

The ITSMAX-designed fareboxes will now be manufactured in the U.S., complying with Buy America standards and supporting local job growth.

Modeshift announced a strategic partnership with Canadian transit technology innovator ITSMAX Solutions Inc. to introduce a next-generation validating farebox integrated with Modeshift’s 360-degree fare collection platform. 

The new fareboxes, built to modern IoT standards, eliminate many of the pain points agencies face when outdated equipment leads to service disruptions and high operating costs, Modeshift CEO Miroslav Katsarov said in a press release.

“Legacy farebox providers have built their business on outdated, inflexible systems,” he explained. “We’re changing that model by combining cloud-native innovation with reliable and proven hardware and finally giving agencies a modern option that can handle every form of payment, provide real-time data, and reduce operating costs.”

The New Fareboxes

The validating fareboxes are engineered with speed, security, and serviceability. Key features include:

  • Fast, secure cash handling for quicker boarding.

  • Ergonomic touchscreen interface for improved usability.

  • Support for all fare media, including mobile and paper options.

  • Integrated real-time data sync and spatial intelligence.

  • Modular design that allows tool-free maintenance and rapid in-field component swaps.

Company officials added that this modular approach reduces system downtime and allows faulty components to be repaired off-site without pulling vehicles from service, preserving fleet availability and improving rider reliability.

The ITSMAX-designed fareboxes will now be manufactured in the U.S., complying with Buy America standards and supporting local job growth.

Already in deployment with two U.S. transit agencies, the fareboxes complement Modeshift’s broader mobility suite, which includes account-based ticketing, real-time passenger information, a mobile app, and CAD/AVL integration, the company said. The platform is designed to scale, making it ideal for rural transit systems, mid-sized networks, and large urban agencies.
