The City of Greensboro, N.C. has named Bruce D. Adams for the position of public transportation manager of the Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA), effective May 1. Adams, a former Army captain has been with GTA and the City since 2001, most recently serving as Senior Transit Planner.

In his new role, he will oversee all administrative and managerial functions of the Public Transportation Division, including managing a $20 million budget, supervising a professional staff of seven and serving as primary staff liaison with the City Council appointed GTA Board. His responsibilities will also include monitoring the efficiency and effectiveness of contractor-provided transit services serving 4.3 million annual passenger trips and the operation of the J. Douglas Galyon Depot transportation hub.

“[Bruce] has an excellent grasp on the day-to-day operations and management of our transit contractor, and he has evolved/emerged through the succession planning process that we established several years ago," said City of Greensboro Transportation Director Adam Fischer. "Over the past 6 months, Bruce has operated as the de facto Public Transportation Manager and has done a great job, specifically addressing some sensitive customer service issues, critical budget issues and leading GTA through a time of transition.”

Adams fills the role previously held by Elizabeth G. James for 25 years until her recent retirement. His immediate goals include closing a current budget gap, modernizing transit technology and establishing a sustainable, long-range plan for the future of GTA service.
