Version 4.1 of the Amtrak app delivers significant enhancements to meet customers’ needs, including new initiatives to support personal safety, contact-free travel, and promote physical distancing.

Amtrak Updates Tech to Provide Real-Time Look at Train Capacity

Amtrak made a few updates to its website and mobile app. Now, when booking their trip, customers can easily see how full their reserved train will be. Since bookings are limited on most trains to allow for physical distancing, the quantity of customers traveling is indicated based on the reduced number of seats available. The percentage is displayed in real-time when customers search for their train.

In addition to the capacity details, Amtrak also updated its app to provide an extra level of confidence and security while traveling. Version 4.1 delivers significant enhancements to meet customers’ needs, including new initiatives to support personal safety, contact-free travel, and promote physical distancing. Now with the app updates, customers can more efficiently book, change, and monitor travel while on the go.

“We have studied, analyzed, and made improvements to the Amtrak travel experience — from beginning to end — for the safety and health of our workforce and travelers,” said Amtrak President/CEO Bill Flynn. “The improvements made to the app and website will help improve our customers’ experience while providing easy access to important travel information.”

Amtrak is committed to continually improving and expanding mobile platforms. Several contact-free and convenience measures have been implemented into the Amtrak app. New and existing features include:

  • Capacity indicator: The quantity of customers traveling is now indicated as a percentage of bookings based on the reduced number of seats available. The percentage displayed is available in real-time when customers search for their train.

  • Seamless gate service: To reduce crowds at departure boards, Amtrak app users can now receive gate and track information via push notifications at select stations. The home screen also includes gate and track information for applicable reservations (when published).

  • Contact-free travel: Customers can book, board, check train status, and access information from the convenience and safety of a mobile device. Amtrak encourages boarding with eTickets, which conductors scan from the Amtrak app.

  • Get Info at Your Fingertips: Customers can check station information, route details, service alerts, and more.

All customers who have downloaded the app and opted in for notifications can receive updates on their mobile device. Customers who have opted into Amtrak’s delay notifications will receive an email or text two hours before departure. Capacity details are available on all trains except the Pacific Surfliner and Capitol Corridor.

The updates will supplement Amtrak’s proactive efforts to deliver a new standard of travel that includes enhanced cleaning protocols, contactless amenities, social distancing on board and in stations, required face coverings, and sophisticated air filtration.
