Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has vetoed a bill that would have allowed the state to reimburse school districts for part of the cost of using transit services to get children to and from school. A spokeswoman for the governor's office said the veto was necessary because the bill doesn't comply with existing Illinois statutes, which help to ensure safe pupil transportation. "We don't have the same type of oversight in municipal systems as we do on yellow school buses, so we couldn't ensure the same level of safety," Abby Ottenhoff told the Daily Illini. Proponents of the bill are hoping that Blagojevich's veto can be overridden at the next legislative session.
