Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) riders can now plan their trip on the System with the "Go Metro-Los Angeles" application, a mobile transit application for iPhone and iPod Touch / OS 4.0.

The "Go Metro" app brings technology to the service of a rapidly evolving and comprehensive transit system that includes 79.1 miles of rail service and some 2,200 buses in service on an average weekday.

The app is available on the iTunes store for free.

Metro's iPhone app allows customers to locate the nearest Metro Bus lines and Metro Rail stations based on the iPhone's GPS capabilities. The application is integrated with Google Maps. Rail stations are represented with a pin and a popup displays the bus line information.

Customers can get basic information including fares, maps and timetables and can also read headlines news and service updates.

Metro is releasing this initial version, Build 1.0, as a "work in progress" to solicit customer feedback and comments to improve the application. Customers may use an online form to give Metro staff comments and feedback for app improvement.

While this Build 1.0 app is only available for iPhone and iPod Touch, transit information is accessible on all mobile browsers via Metro's mobile Website - which has been redesigned and expanded to include Metro's Next Trip (a Web application), Metro Rapid Real Time Arrivals (a Web application), Service Alerts via Twitter, and I-405 Daily Construction Updates (via twitter); along with basic transit information.
