New N.C. company offers “green” rides
Fleet consists of biodiesel cars, with plans to add CNG, electric.
Green Transit, a new transportation services company serving western North Carolina, was launched on Thursday, providing subscription-based, shared-ride, private transportation for Buncombe, Madison, Henderson and Haywood counties, as well as the city of Asheville.
Green Transit will provide transportation options using vehicles powered by alternative fuels like biodiesel, natural gas and electricity, because western North Carolina, especially the Asheville area, has become a hub for green companies.
The company's fleet currently consists of biodiesel-fueled passenger cars. In the near future it will add a van running on CNG. Its short-range plan calls for adding an electrically powered bus in early 2008. The service is demand-responsive for a subscription card holder and riders are automatically matched with others needing the same trip.
To use the service, subscribers contact the company at least 24 hours before they wish to ride. Subscribers pay an annual fee, are billed monthly by e-mail for rides and receive a bonus for getting new people to become members.
