Schwarzenegger proposes huge transit cuts

Governor wants to shift $1 billion of transit funding to the general fund

1 min to read

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has unveiled a plan that would jeopardize the future of dozens of transit projects by shifting $1 billion worth of transportation money to the general fund. Schwarzenegger's proposal would help to close a $14 billion budget gap but would imperil key transit projects throughout the state. In Southern California, high-priority projects such as the expansion of Los Angeles' bus rapid transit program and the extension of a light rail line to East Los Angeles could be derailed, unless agencies could raise their own funds to fill the gap. In Northern California, the extension of the BART rail system to San Jose could be delayed for several years. The proposal still needs to clear the Democrat-controlled state legislature.
