The Senate last week unanimously approved S.929, the Over-the-Road Bus Security and Safety Act of 2003, which would provide $25 million in industry security grants for FY 2003. The bill, sponsored by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) and ranking member Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.), would establish a grant program for security improvements to motorcoach operations. That includes modifying terminals and facilities, driver protection, communication systems, cameras and video surveillance, training and passenger manifests. The American Bus Association has been working with Congress on bus security authorizing legislation that would help private bus operators make security improvements to their operations through grant monies that can be used for a variety of applications. The bill would provide $25 million in industry security grants for FY 2003 and $99 million in FY 2004.
