Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT) announced the launch of its new pilot microtransit service in Santa Maria.
The program provides an added convenient and sustainable transportation option for residents through a flexible, on-demand ride hailing service.
Riders can book trips using the new SMRT Micro app on their phones.
“Microtransit enables the city to offer added convenient and sustainable transportation option for all in our community, regardless of where they live,” said Gamaliel Anguiano, transit services manager. “This more efficient service will greatly help those with evening/night classes or work shifts that go beyond our fixed route transit service hours.”
Microtransit offers enhanced accessibility where it is deployed, utilizing smaller electric buses to navigate the narrow streets and other areas inaccessible to larger vehicles.
The ride hailing aspect of the program offers on-demand convenience and Americans with Disability Act accessibility.
With Electric eJest minibuses, the program helps promote cleaner air and a more sustainable transportation system.
SMRT Micro utilizes technology to offer seamless booking, real time alerts, and digital payment options.
Initially, the pilot service will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. As demand for the service grows, additional days and times will be offered.
