Austin, Texas’ Capital Metro will open six new bike shelters along the Red Line and at two popular transit centers on Tuesday.

The new stations will be located at MetroRail’s Plaza Saltillo, MLK Jr., Highland and Lakeline stations, and at the Tech Ridge Park & Ride and South Congress Transit Center.

Each fully-enclosed bike shelter will offer secure, card-key access from 5 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., daily, and will have space for 24 two-wheeled standard or electric bikes. Other features of the shelters include sitting areas for changing shoes, work stands with tools for minor bike repairs and air pumps to make refilling tires easy.

Riders can purchase MetroBike entry cards online for an introductory cost of $30. The cards are valid for 12 months of unlimited use from the date of purchase and allow holders exclusive access to any of the seven MetroBike shelters in the system.

“These new bike shelters are another example of Capital Metro’s commitment to enhancing options for riders traveling with bikes,” said Capital Metro’s Watson. ”People can feel confident that their bikes are safe and secure, and with seven locations to choose from now, we think riders will really enjoy the ability to park their bikes and go.”

The first MetroBike Shelter opened at the Kramer MetroRail Station in August 2012 and was built by Capital Metro as a pilot project to provide MetroRail riders with an alternative to carrying their bikes on the train. Since then, Capital Metro secured a $554,000 FTA Livability Grant award and the City of Austin provided an additional $50,000 of matching funds to help build the six new facilities.
