A group of about 2,000 union, environmental, civic and religious activists marched on the Pennsylvania state capitol in Harrisburg Monday in a rally to demand transit funding reform.
Arriving by bus from all across the state, they urged Gov. Ed Rendell to find funds for struggling systems, including the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) in Philadelphia and the Port Authority of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh.
SEPTA and the Port Authority, the state’s two largest transit authorities, plan fare hikes and service cuts in the coming weeks to deal with massive budget shortfalls. Several smaller agencies in the state have already cut back transit service.
