Transportation advocacy group AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), in partnership with 16 organizations, has developed a report that will be submitted to the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission, created by Congress to analyze and make recommendations on how to equip the nation's transportation system to meet future needs.
The report, entitled "A New Vision for the 21st Century," cites global economic competition, metropolitan congestion and global climate change as being among the dynamics requiring new thinking for the nation's transportation system of the future. AASHTO officials say the U.S. must preserve and modernize transportation systems, improve performance and add substantial capacity in highways, transit, rail, airports and seaports.
