The new Passenger Code of Conduct is in response to a law passed by the Illinois Legislature in 2023 that gives transit agencies the ability to act against riders who engage in certain conduct.
The unions, with whom the company has had strong working relationships since 1976 and 1968, respectively, voted with a resounding 94% endorsement for the new five-year contract.
To sweeten the deal even more, the board also recently approved pay increases for these essential positions, effective Jan. 1, 2024.
The move will result in an additional $1.25 per hour wage increase, which for example, would increase the starting hourly wage for Broward County Transit bus operators to $20.73.
Both agreements call for pay increases and increased benefits.
While a deal has yet to be reached, labor negotiations are ongoing between OCTA and the union representing OCTA’s 150 maintenance workers.
The union has stated that healthcare is one of the biggest sticking points.
In addition to the one-time payment, MARTA’s 2,811 employees represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 732 will receive a 2% general wage increase next February.
