Alstom Transport and Attiko Metro, operator of Athens metro line 2 and 3, signed a $21 million contract covering the supply of ICONIS (automatic train supervision system) and PIS (passenger information system) for the extension of those metro lines.
These projects are part of the development plan for the Athens metro; line 2 and 3 will be extended, with the construction of 16 new stations, to link to the city’s eastern and western outskirts.
In the framework of this contract, Alstom will equip the control center with its ICONIS automatic train supervision system with which the operator will be able to monitor its trains and manage traffic with great flexibility and effectiveness, according to the company. Alstom will also outfit the new stations with its AGATE e-Media passenger information and safety system that the operator will be able to use to communicate with passengers at the station in real time.
Alstom is responsible for the design, engineering and manufacturing of the equipment, as well as supervising its installation and testing. These systems are designed and manufactured entirely by Alstom Transport’s sites in Athens, Greece; Charleroi, Belgium; Montreal; and Saint-Ouen, France.
This equipment will allow a large increase in passenger traffic and cover needs linked to the extension of line 2 and 3 of the Athens metro. They will be put into service in a series of phases running from 2009 to 2014.
