Milwaukee's long-awaited streetcar, The Hop, launched its initial 2.5-mile loop on city streets.

The streetcar links the terminus at the city's intermodal station to Milwaukee’s to various attractions, restaurants, and shops. The service is within walking distance to the convention center and multi-purpose arena.

According to Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, property taxes along the M-line route have already increased 28%. The city also projects that The Hop could generate $3.35 billion in new development in the downtown area.

The daily service features five streetcars with stops at 18 stations along a 2.5-mile loop every 10 to 15 minutes. The 150-passenger capacity low-floor railcars includes two doors per side for fast boarding and each car features roll-on/roll-off access for wheelchairs, strollers, and bikes.

Rides on The Hop will be free for its inaugural year per a sponsorship with a local hotel and casino.
