The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is inviting multifamily property owners and managers to join its new Residential Transit Pilot Program, an initiative offering transportation benefits for tenants.
The program promotes sustainable travel and aims to reduce dependence on personal vehicles, particularly in communities that are already well-served by public transit.
Through this pilot, RIPTA will offer property owners and managers the opportunity to order free monthly transit passes for their residents, providing them with the gift of free transportation in December 2025 and January 2026.
“By partnering directly with multifamily property owners and managers, we’re helping residents experience the convenience and value of public transportation in communities that are already transit-accessible,” said RIPTA CEO Christopher Durand. “This initiative makes it easier for more people to choose transit over driving.”
The new initiative is funded by the Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council (EC4) in accordance with its Fiscal Year 2025 Spending Plan.
The EC4 receives funding through the proceeds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) of the state of Rhode Island. This pilot program is fully grant-funded and does not draw from RIPTA’s operating budget.
