The RATP and Alstom Transport have joined forces for a year-long trial of a new onboard energy storage solution, supercapacitor technology, fitted to a carriage on the T3 tramway in Paris.

This system is being tested as part of the STEEM (Maximised Energy Efficiency Tramway System) project. It will enable the trams to run without catenary power, allowing them to be integrated more effectively into the urban environment and generate energy and infrastructure savings.

In order to respond even more effectively to the specific needs of each local authority, Alstom is now exploring one of the most promising avenues in the field of catenary-free solutions, supercapacitor technology, in partnership with the RATP. This technology will be tested under commercial operating conditions for a year on one of the 21 Citadis carriages running on the T3 line. This project, called PREDIT, is subsidized by the French public body responsible for environmental and energy management, ADEME.

The RATP's entire metro, RER and tram fleet is equipped with rolling stock that ensures that energy generated during braking is recovered to the electric power network.
