Daimler Buses North America received the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 Environmental Management System certification for its Mississauga, Ontario production facility. This marks the first of the Daimler bus production facilities in North America to become certified.
“We provide green solutions in transportation like our hybrid buses and EPA 2010 compliant buses, so it’s only fitting that ‘greener’ vehicles are produced in ‘greener’ facilities,” said Rich Ferguson, president and CEO for Daimler Buses North America. “Sustainability is a major focus for Daimler, and an ISO 14001:2004 certification production facility is a requirement for all Daimler production locations worldwide and we are pleased of our efforts for reductions of waste and for optimization in consumption of natural resources for this location.”
ISO 14001certification allows Daimler Buses North America to establish targets that work to reduce landfill waste, gas consumption, and electricity consumption. All departments are involved in meeting these reductions by implementing major changes within the entire organization. Daimler Buses implemented a system with its suppliers that provide returnable packaging racks that are used when transporting bus components from supplier to Daimler Buses. This initiative has resulted in diverting 523,000 pounds of wood from the landfill, which translates into saving 250 mature pine trees every year. Energy consumption has been decreased by installing more energy friendly light bulbs to an electronic controlled heating and cooling system, along with other initiatives.
