Detroit's SMART needs tax hike to keep operating, agency says
Agency officials say if hike doesn't go through, bus fleet will not be able to operate beyond 2015.

DETROIT — Metro Detroit’s suburban bus system, the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART), is pushing to have a millage hike put before voters in August, saying that if it doesn’t get the tax increase, it will not be able to keep its aging bus fleet operating beyond next year, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The increase would generate an additional $28 million per year and an estimated $140.9 million during the next five years, SMART officials said.
