Fare evader crackdown helps SEPTA cut subway crime
When "opportunistic thefts" began growing after cell phone service was introduced in the subways, transit police noticed that many thieves got into the subway without paying.
PHILADELPHIA — Crime on Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) subways is dropping thanks to a new push to crack down on turnstile jumpers, NBC10 News reported.
SEPTA transit police say 10 times as many "fare evaders" were arrested last year, compared with just two years ago, according to the report.
