The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded a $1.1 million grant so South Dakota residents can enjoy improved bus services.
"New buses and preventive maintenance funded by this grant will enhance service to all riders, reduce air pollution, lower maintenance costs and increase fuel efficiency," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation will use the grant to purchase transit vehicles, perform preventive maintenance on vehicles at transit agencies around the state and for the construction of a new transit facility in the city of Spearfish.
"The Obama Administration is proud to provide these funds, which will ensure the South Dakota Department of Transportation can continue to provide its riders with safe and efficient service, and ensure a cleaner environment for everyone," said FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff.
In Fiscal Year 2010, the FTA will provide $10.4 billion in federal funding for transit to states and local communities across the U.S. The funds awarded to South Dakota are part of the FTA's capital investment program that provides financial assistance for buses and bus facilities.
