INIT recently partnered with Bytemark for the implementation of a new mobile ticketing project for Capital Metro in Austin, Texas. Bytemark has implemented their new mobile ticketing app, CapMetro App across all its services.

The mobile tickets incorporate a QR Code which can be read by INIT’s PROXmobil2 readers installed on the new MetroRapid BRT buses. Verification of QR-based tickets is certifiable by fare inspectors using hand-held devices or visually verified by vehicle operators. INIT’s PROXmobil2 reader is the first passenger-operated validator of its kind in North America to authenticate QR-based mobile tickets.

The PROXmobil2 validators are stationed at all three doors onboard the MetroRapid buses allowing passengers to board more quickly and bypass the typical visual inspection required with mobile tickets. For Capital Metro passengers, this translates to a smoother, more convenient service.

The onboard PROXmobil2 readers also communicate with the back office systems through a mobile access router that was installed as part of the project. The INIT and Bytemark back office systems are integrated in order to provide near real-time transmission of ticket information to and from the PROXmobil2 readers. This provides a seamless ticketing transaction process for Capital Metro and their customers.

“We are pleased to be partnering with Bytemark and INIT to provide this leading edge service to our customers in Austin,” said Capital Metro Vice President & Chief Information Officer Joe Iannello. “INIT’s PROXmobil2 readers are performing very well for us on our MetroRapid vehicles.”

In addition to reading QR codes, the INIT PROXmobil2 validators will support Capital Metro’s long term objectives to process any ISO 14443-compliant smart cards and ISO 18092-compliant NFC devices.
The partnership between Bytemark and INIT will contribute to faster, more efficient service for Capital Metro, according to company officials.
