The Las Vegas Monorail closed indefinitely due to problems with equipment falling off the trains. The $650 million, four-mile system closed Sept. 8, after a metal part connected to a drive shaft fell from the train, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal. This is the second time since its July 15 debut that equipment has fallen off the railcars. The dual-lane elevated line, which carried 40,000 passengers a day between the convention center and several resorts, will lose an estimated $100,000 per day due to the closure. "We will not open this system until we have confidence and verification that the system is safe for passenger service," said Jim Gibson, CEO of monorail manager Transit Systems Management LLC. A $450 million, 2.25-mile extension of the rail line has also stalled due to the problems.
