The City Council of the City of Jackson, Miss. unanimously approved the selection of National Express Transit Corp. to provide the city’s JATRAN fixed-route transit and paratransit services beginning Oct. 1.
The long-term contract has a potential value of more than $52 million.

“We are looking forward to a great partnership with National Express. We believe strongly that they will provide the highest level of customer service and cost effectiveness for our community,” said John Andoh, the city’s transportation planning and transit services manager. “This new model will save the city’s general fund $2 million as compared to historical costs for public transit.”
National Express was ranked the highest of three firms that included two other multinational transit contracting and management companies. The contract to manage and operate JATRAN is the company’s first public transportation contract in Mississippi.
