NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit officials conceded that the agency will not meet the Dec. 31 federal deadline to complete Positive Train Control (PTC) installation and will need an extension of up to two years assuming the agency can convince regulators to grant it, NBC New York reports.
The concession comes on the heels of a letter sent to NJ Transit by the Federal Railroad Administration earlier this month that said the agency was at risk of failing to meet the requirements to even apply for the extension. However, a source with the agency says it is confident it will have installed 85% of all hardware in place by the end of this year, which under federal guidelines would qualify it for the extra two years.
