NJ Transit makes $40 million upgrades
New commuter buses, fare collection highlight board-approved spending increase.
New Jersey Transit Corp.'s (NJ Transit) board of directors has approved $40 million to buy more commuter buses and to upgrade fare collection equipment, according to wire reports.
The agency will spend about $25 million to buy 53 new buses from Motor Coach Industries and to lease 20 more buses from private operators. Both new and leased buses are intended to ease congestion on 31 busy routes in the state.
NJ Transit will also spend $15 million to upgrade 543 ticket vending machines with time-saving, user-friendly features. The agency will reportedly purchase 157 new machines.
The new buses and fare collection equipment come in anticipation of an estimated 6% increase in ridership for 2005-06, according to NJ Transit officials.
