New Jersey Transit and the American Red Cross have partnered to raise the level of emergency preparedness at more than three dozen rail stations, light rail stops and bus terminals.

Representatives from the agencies will hand out information on terrorism awareness, creating emergency kits, alternative travel options in the event of service disruptions and other emergency-related preparations.

At the state’s largest transportation hub, Newark’s Penn Station, transit police will distribute emergency preparedness guides and security alert cards, which include a phone number to report unattended packages or suspicious activity.

Red Cross workers will also collect donations for the organization’s Hurricane Katrina disaster relief fund.
