NEWARK, N.J. — Despite saving millions of dollars last year in overtime and other employee payouts, New Jersey Transit lost those savings after private contractors were hired for superstorm Sandy cleanup work, reported the Asbury Park Press..

According to the report, the  transportation agency paid $2.9 million less in 2012 than it did in 2011 to employees cashing out their unused sick and vacation time. It also paid $4.1 million less in overtime from the previous year. However, the total of $7 million in savings was offset by the $40 million spent to hire contractors for storm repair and restoration. For the full story, click here.
