Howard grabbed Maksim Gelman, 23, after he hopped off the No. 2 train shortly before the Times Square station and crossed the tracks to board an uptown No. 3 train. The officer apprehended Gelman after 9 a.m.

Two other officers helped in the arrest, including off-duty Det. Marcello Razzo and fellow NYPD transit officer Tamara Taylor.

A manhunt was underway to catch Gelman who fatally stabbed his stepfather, female friend Yelena Bulchenko and her mother before running down a man on the street. Gelman also stabbed at least four other people and carjacked three vehicles in a bloody 24-hour span that began before dawn Friday, reports the New York Daily News.

Two of Gelman's victims said they were caught off-guard, when he carjacked them. Arthur DiCrescento, 60, was double-parked on E. 24th St. when Gelman flung open the door of his 1995 Pontiac Bonneville and repeatedly stabbed him in the chest.

Sheldon Pottinger was waiting inside his black 2001 Nissan Maxima, when a man approached and yelled, "Motherf-----, get out of the car." The man began stabbing Pottinger, who scrambled to escape through the passenger door, while the vehicle was in motion. After two blocks, Pottinger finally popped it open and tumbled to the street, reports the New York Daily News.
