VOLGOGRAD, Russia — CNN reported that a suspected suicide bombing hit a trolleybus during the morning rush hour on Monday, killing at least 14 people. This comes on the heels of yesterday’s explosion at Volgograd’s main rail station — a major transit point for people traveling to Sochi — which killed 17 people and injured 35.
A spokesperson for Russia’s federal investigation agency told RIA Novosti, the the state-run news agency that both explosions were terrorist attacks. While no one claimed responsibility for the bombings, they happened several months after the leader of a Chechen separatist group pledged violence to disrupt the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
The attacks highlight Russia’s security challenges as it prepares to host the Winter Olympics in less than one month, according to CNN. For the full story, click here.
