VIA Proposes Adjustments to Balance Service Demand, Available Labor

VIA Metropolitan Transit proposed service changes at its September Board Work Session to maintain service quality while adjusting to available staff levels, beginning Oct.25, according to the company’s press release.

VIA said the adjustments are meant to be temporary and will primarily focus on fixed-route bus frequency. The changes would create 2- to 5-minute differences on most affected routes, if approved by the VIA Board of Trustees at its regular Board Meeting on Sept. 28.

Other routes with lower demand could see 20- to 30-minute adjustment. VIAtrans and VIA Link service will not be affected.

“The global pandemic has affected transportation providers nationwide. VIA and San Antonio are not alone in this challenge,” said Jeffrey C. Arndt, VIA president and CEO. “These temporary changes will allow us to provide the best quality and most balanced service possible at this time, and as we keep moving toward recovery.”

VIA also said it is working to address COVID and workforce conditions. The company is actively recruiting and training operators and mechanics, offering starting pay for drivers at $20.25, a sign-on bonus, benefits, and training.

A free, virtual Telephone-Town Hall to discuss the proposed changes and other updates to VIA service is scheduled for Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. Persons interested in joining the discussion can register to join the call at VIAinfo.net/townhall or by texting the word “VIA” to 833-898-5483.
