With scarce public transportation, Venezuelans turn to illegal ‘kennels’

MARACAIBO, Venezuela — Across Venezuela, which is experiencing an economic crisis, people have begun using alternative forms of transportation — mostly delivery trucks — nicknamed "kennels" for the cramped and unsafe conditions, reported the Miami Herald.
Due to a chronic shortage of spare parts and little maintenance, repairing public transport vehicles has been a growing problem, the report said.
The country's public transportation has become so scarce that 95% of cars, buses and even taxicabs are no longer on the streets, while the number of "kennels" has increased by 25 percent, according to the Committee of Public Transport Customers in Caracas, reported the Miami Herald.
