New Jersey Transit Corp. (NJ TRANSIT) awarded a milestone contract to New Flyer of America Inc., a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., for the purchase of up to 750 Xcelsior 60-foot clean-diesel transit buses, representing a total of 1,500 equivalent units (EUs).
The contract includes a firm order for 200 buses (400 EUs), with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026, and options for up to 550 additional buses (1,100 EUs).
The order was added to New Flyer’s Q1 2025 backlog, making it one of the company's most significant clean-diesel bus procurements.
“Our 25-year partnership with NJ TRANSIT is built on trust, innovation, and performance,” said Chris Stoddart, president of New Flyer. “NJ TRANSIT operates vehicles from the NFI family, including both New Flyer and MCI models, featuring clean-diesel, CNG, and battery-electric propulsion. All of these are supported by a robust parts delivery program anchored by a dedicated NFI Parts warehouse located in New Jersey.”
NJ TRANSIT is a critical mobility provider for New Jersey and neighboring regions. With a bus fleet of more than 2,200 vehicles and an overall transit system that provides over 225 million annual passenger trips, the agency is a leader in the transportation industry.
The new buses will replace aging vehicles, significantly improving service reliability, operational efficiency, and customer comfort.
“This procurement marks a key milestone in our commitment to delivering a fully modernized bus fleet by 2031,” said Kris Kolluri, president and CEO of NJ TRANSIT. “These new articulated buses will not only expand capacity on some of our busiest routes, but also provide a significantly improved onboard experience for our customers, offering greater comfort, reliability, and accessibility.”
The Xcelsior 60-foot clean-diesel platform leverages ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, next-generation engines, and advanced emissions control systems to provide a proven, low-emission solution tailored for high-demand urban operations.
The contract reinforces NFI Group’s role as a long-term mobility partner to one of the country’s largest public transit agencies, while also supporting NJ TRANSIT’s strategic goal of fleet modernization by the start of the next decade.
The beginning of the final BRT segment advances construction across all five segments, reflecting steady progress toward shorter travel times, improved accessibility, and a more dependable connection to jobs, businesses, and community destinations.
