[IMAGE]gannett.jpg[/IMAGE]By combining functionality with sustainable design, Gannett Fleming partnered with the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) to achieve more efficient daily operation of its fleet at its Bus and Maintenance Facility in Richmond, Va. Gannett Fleming provided preliminary and final design, as well as construction management services for this new 12-acre complex, completed in 2010. The facility includes an administrative office building and GRTC's primary bus maintenance and heavy repair facility.

Designed to optimize energy performance with the selection of special heating and ventilating equipment that recovers energy by extracting heat from the building exhaust stream and pre-heating the incoming fresh air stream, the building also implements load-reduction strategies, such as a thermal building envelope, day lighting, and a water reclamation system to recycle the gray water used for bus washing to conserve water and reduce utility costs. Utilization of low-flow faucets, showerheads and waterless urinals also significantly reduce water use.

During construction, GRTC recycled 50 percent to 75 percent of its construction waste. This facility was constructed using building materials with recycled content, including steel framing, masonry and concrete. Low-emitting materials, including adhesive, sealants, paints, carpets and specified plywood without urea formaldehyde, were also utilized.

This project is registered with the certification goal of LEED Silver. This is the first public facility in Richmond that has been designed to achieve this honor.
