The Public Transport Regulatory Commission (PTRC) in Amman, Jordan, is beginning a pilot program to provide paratransit service in the city. The Public Transport Law of 2002 requires transportation facilities that cater to the physically challenged. It was suggested to the PTRC by Prince Raad that there be provisions for a medium-size bus for every 25 buses in the capital, one taxi for the disabled in every taxi office and a van in driving schools and tourist offices. The PTRC will be working to identify where there is demand for this type of service and develop a route map and timetable from which to set specific pickup points. Official estimates put the number of Jordanians with special needs between 250,000 and 300,000, of which 10% are physically challenged.
