The Washington Metropolitan Transportation Authority (WMATA) board of directors has awarded Alstom a $129 million contract for the design and manufacture of 62 new heavy rail subway cars. The series 6000 cars are for use on the Blue Line extension to the Largo Town Center and for service growth. The contract also includes an option, with a value of $194 million, to supply an additional 120 new subway cars for use on the Orange Line extension to Tysons Corner. The new cars, to be assembled in Alstom's facilities in Hornell, N.Y., will feature Alstom's propulsion technology and an advanced cab signaling system.
