The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced that Florida's Broward County Commuter Rail South project has advanced to the engineering phase of the agency's Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program, with an anticipated federal funding commitment of approximately $164 million.

The milestone allows Broward County Transit to move forward with engineering activities, utility relocation, demolition, property acquisition, and other preconstruction work, including the procurement of specialized equipment and materials.

The proposed project would extend commuter rail service 10.5 miles along the existing Florida East Coast Railway corridor, connecting Aventura in Miami-Dade County with Fort Lauderdale.

The extension would serve northeast Miami-Dade County, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, the Dania Beach/Airport District, and neighborhoods south of downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Expanding South Florida Rail Connections

The project includes three new stations and rail vehicles to support the planned service. Once completed, the extension would provide an additional north-south transportation option for commuters traveling between Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

"The Broward County Commuter Rail South project will improve transportation options for families and commuters between Miami and Fort Lauderdale," said FTA Acting Deputy Administrator Matthew Cahill. "Transportation and mobility are all about improving the functionality of cities. This project will help connect South Floridians to essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment centers."

Next Steps for Federal Funding

The CIG program provides federal funding for major public transportation capital investments through a multi-step review and approval process.
