Amtrak, VRE Trains Now Serving New Boarding Platform at Washington Union Station
Amtrak has opened a new track and platform at Washington Union Station to reduce congestion and expand capacity. The upgrade supports Virginia Railway Express and Amtrak services connecting the Northeast Corridor with destinations across the Southeast.
The new platform includes accessible features such as a dedicated hallway, elevator, escalator, and stairs to improve station navigation for all passengers.

Amtrak has opened a new platform and track at Washington Union Station to expand service capacity and improve train movement through the Northeast Corridor and into Virginia.
The new Track 22 platform will primarily support Virginia Railway Express (VRE) trains, in addition to Amtrak Long Distance and Amtrak Virginia services. The project aims to reduce congestion at Amtrak’s second-busiest station.

“This investment helps ease congestion and improve reliability at a critical point in the rail network,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris.
VRE CEO Rich Dalton added that the expansion enhances “reliability and flexibility of service for all passengers moving through the station.”
Track 22 at Washington Union Station now accommodates Virginia Railway Express and Amtrak trains, expanding capacity at the Northeast Corridor hub.

Platform and Station Improvements
Track 22 is located on the lower level of the 118-year-old station and was previously used for train storage. Work included installing new track, rebuilding the platform, and restoring historic structural columns.
The platform is now fully accessible, featuring a new hallway with elevator, escalator, and stair access from the station concourse.

The upgrades are part of Amtrak’s broader efforts to modernize Washington Union Station as a multimodal transportation hub.
Amtrak will open grant applications March 23 for community projects near the Frederick Douglass Tunnel alignment in Baltimore as part of a $50 million investment tied to the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program.
The Denmark Station $2.3 million construction investment project includes a new 280-foot concrete boarding platform, built eight inches above the top of rail, for improved accessibility for passengers with disabilities and families with small children and much more.
Caltrain and its partners have implemented safety improvements at specific locations in response to known risk conditions, operational needs, and available funding since the agency’s founding.

The 3.92-mile addition will soon take riders west beyond its current Wilshire and Western station in Koreatown, continuing under Wilshire Boulevard through neighborhoods and communities including Hancock Park, Windsor Square, the Fairfax District, and Carthay Circle into Beverly Hills.
Under the plan, all long-distance routes will transition to a universal single-level fleet, replacing today’s mix of bi-level and single-level equipment.
