The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has released standards to benefit U.S. rail transit systems by improving safety, reducing costs and enhancing service reliability. APTA brought together more than 200 transit professionals, who through a formal consensus process over four years, developed the newly released rail transit standards. The process also incorporated a public comment period and a formal process to respond to comments. Examples of approved standards include those that prescribe vehicle crashworthiness, operating practices, grade crossings and vehicle inspections.
