Bombardier Transportation received an order, valued at $243 million, from New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) for the supply of 100 multi-level vehicles to increase train system capacity. The contract calls for the design, manufacture and delivery of new multi-level commuter cars. It includes options for up to 186 additional multi-level vehicles which, if exercised, would bring the total value of the order to $525 million. Each of the coach cars will be equipped with the latest in amenities including push button doors, automated destination signs, automated station stop announcements and state-of-the-art heating and air conditioning systems. The purchase of the 100 multi-level railcars, which will be paid for with funding from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey secured by Governor McGreevey, represents a 20-25% increase in seating capacity compared to traditional rail cars. The cars will be delivered to NJ Transit between fall 2005 (prototypes) and March 2007-- timed to meet anticipated ridership growth over the next decade.
