Bombardier Transportation announced it won an order for 74 Bombardier MOVIA metro cars from India's Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC).

The contract is valued at $101 million and includes an option for 40 additional cars. Delivery will follow the completion of existing contracts and is expected to end in 2011.

With the contract award DMRC will be operating a large fleet of 498 MOVIA metro cars, benefiting from economies of scale in both acquisition and maintenance costs.

Additionally, the company announced the completion of its automated people mover system at a ceremony at London Gatwick Airport

The work is part of a massive investment program at the airport to substantially improve passenger facilities. Bombardier's upgrade work included the supply of a Bombardier INNOVIA APM 100 automated people mover system, including six APM vehicles and all of the electrical and mechanical equipment

Bombardier's facility in Pittsburgh, Pa., designed and supplied the new driverless vehicles, automatic train control, communications and power distribution system, station platform doors, as well as project management, systems engineering and integration and test and commissioning.

Bombardier won the contract to replace the existing transit system in December 2007. The system will commence passenger services on Thursday.
