Calif.'s Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) is a recipient of a 2014 AIA TAP BIM Award.

Since 2005, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) community has spearheaded an effort to highlight outstanding case studies in the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology and processes on construction projects.

The ARTIC project was the winner of an AIA TAP Citation in the category of “Stellar Architecture Using BIM.” The award was presented to four firms: HOK, the designer of ARTIC terminal; Parsons Brinckerhoff, the project manager and civil engineer; Buro Happold, which provided mechanical-electrical-pluming, enclosure engineering, and 3D documentation for the project; and Clark Construction as general contractor.

In announcing the award, the AIA TAP jury commented: “This is what BIM is. It is an innovative piece of architecture. A great process with many strengths. The form is one of beauty and simplicity. The use of integrated design and modeling optimized the structure. Appreciate the use of an objective-based approach to technology selection. They used the tools best necessary to accomplish the design they desired to accomplish. This group leveraged the power of BIM and it was especially valuable.”

A project of the City of Anaheim and the Orange County Transportation Authority, ARTIC combines the heritage and civic importance of the grand 19th century rail stations of the past with the size, scale and complexity of today’s modern airport terminals, according to Parsons Brinckerhoff.

The intermodal facility, scheduled to be completed later this year, will accommodate several modes of transportation, including Metrolink commuter rail and Amtrak, bus, shuttle and taxi systems as well as future high-speed rail.
