Calif.'s new SMART commuter rail system will add police chief
Earlier this month, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law SB 626 authored by Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, which established the top cop position, who will be responsible for the safety of passengers and the rail line itself, the Marin Independent Journal reported.
PETALUMA, Calif. — When the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit’s (SMART) trains begin rolling late next year, the commuter service will have its own police chief responsible for the safety of passengers and the rail line itself, the Marin Independent Journal reported.
Earlier this month, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law SB 626 authored by Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, which established the top cop position.
The legislation only grants authority to hire one sworn police officer. SMART would have to contract with police agencies in Marin and Sonoma if the rail board felt more officers are needed. The legislation does not authorize the SMART board to establish an independent police force. For the full story, click here.
