Conrail will reimburse $3.5 million to settle claims it underreported miles for its use of Amtrak's rails. A 1986 contract required Conrail to report the mileage its trains traveled on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and pay for track usage, U.S. Attorney Patrick L. Meehan said Monday. Amtrak alleged that Conrail underreported millions of miles, said Rich Manieri, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. Conrail has denied any allegations or liability to Amtrak. In return for payment of $3.5 million, Conrail will be released from any civil liability to the railway.
