The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) approved a contract this week for the installation of a wireless telecommunications system in its subway tunnels, underground stations and station passageways.
The new system will enhance the agency’s existing two-way radio system and improve redundant subway communication options for the CTA, Chicago Police and Fire Departments and EMS personnel.
Additionally, CTA will be able to contract use of its wireless telecommunications to local wireless service providers, allowing customers to use cell phones, e-mail, wireless internet, paging and text messaging throughout the CTA’s 11.4-mile subway system.
