The Tri-County Commuter Rail District in Pompano Beach, Fla., became the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) after a law passed by the Florida State Legislature. Under the law, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area will be able to seek federal funding as a single unit. By becoming regional, the RTA can coordinate its activities with the Metropolitan Transportation Organizations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, local transit agencies and regional planning councils. Local decision-making concerning operational issues would remain with the existing transit agencies rather than the RTA.
