California's Foothill Transit has installed Wi-Fi hotspots on buses in an attempt to provide greater incentive to ride the bus to work. Users will be able to access the Internet at speeds up to 300 Kbps via a wireless hub mounted to the top of the vehicle. Six Foothill Transit buses will be equipped with the service and will be free for 60 days. After a successful trial run, Wi-Fi service could be installed on other high traffic routes and be available for an hourly or monthly subscription free. In addition to e-mail and the Internet, agency officials are hoping that Wi-Fi will also add visibility to the Foothill Transit Website, allowing customers to access schedule and connecting information.
