The Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) Arch Street Yard in Queens, N.Y., was named the 2006 Design-Build Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Gannett Fleming Transit & Rail Systems, a division of Gannett Fleming specializing in transit and railroad track, signal, communication and electric traction design, was responsible for preliminary engineering, as well as the functional and operational requirements of the facility. The firm also provided project management services to the LIRR as part of this $76 million project. The new maintenance facility was designed to service a fleet of 800 new M-7 vehicles in support of future operations at Grand Central Terminal.
