On Wednesday, Toronto, Ontario-based GO Transit announced that customers generously donated an astounding $31,964.27 toward Haiti relief efforts. These donations were collected by volunteers from World Vision and the Canadian Red Cross.
At five GO stations, customers donated $9834.69 to World Vision volunteers during the morning rush hour on January 22. At Union Station, GO customers donated $22,129.58 to Canadian Red Cross volunteers during morning and afternoon rush hours on January 27 and 28.
“The generosity of GO customers and the quick response from volunteer groups have resulted in significant contributions to Haiti relief efforts. Thank you for your donations,” says Gary McNeil, GO Transit Managing Director.
On February 8, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced that over $113 million in eligible donations has been raised and will be matched through the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.
Through this Fund, the Government of Canada will match the contributions of individual Canadians to eligible Canadian charitable organizations in support of Haiti relief until this Friday February 12, 2010.
The agency encourages commuters to continue giving to Haiti.
